The Bored Horse🐴 — The third one

Wow, what a week… I can’t wait to let the weekend rush over me because it’s been a bit much. I did get a lot of things done, though, like getting my third — aka booster — shot, so there’s that. That didn’t pan out as I’d hoped last week, the drop-in queue was ridiculous. We had better luck yesterday, so now I’m sitting here with a sore arm.
Anyway, let’s get on with it.

This week on Bored Horse
I published five posts on Bored Horse this week, including the linkage links from last week’s newsletter. That one got a bit of commentary, so you might want to check that out. Oh, and I should know better than titling a post “is smaller actually better” without adding “no pun intended”, but there you go.

Speaking of that last post, I really think you should listen to artist Simon Stålenhag on that hexagon thing.

I want to remind you that I specifically said that hexagons were a lazy and outdated shorthand to make something look “futuristic”. I couldn’t have asked for a better example than the whole nft scene (although it has deeper problems than just being artistically bankrupt).
😋 Now, something completely different:
This is a semla. It's glorious.

It’s not all about me, is it? Here are some things I’ve read, and enjoyed, one way or another, this week.
📧 Email provider Protonmail keep fighting the good fight, this time showing (and blocking) trackers in emails. This is a feature Apple’s Mail app has, as well as Basecamp’s Hey email service. It should be standard everywhere.
🙀 OpenSea went down, and that sparked various stories about how vulnerable the NFT scene is when a major player has problems. Naturally, many pointed out that Web 3 isn’t at all decentralized in a reasonable fashion. I’ll have to think further on this, all the while promising not to make Bored Horse another boring crypto-bro publication.
(I don’t own NFTs or any crypto currency, by the way.)
🐻‍❄️ Enough nonsense, this is important! These polar bears are living in houses, and that’s all you need for now.
🛁 No? Okay, how about a capybara long-bath contest?
🙉 Lifehacker tells you why you shouldn’t click that unsubscribe link in illicit spam emails and texts. That’s today’s PSA.
That’s it for this week. I’ve had very little time for reading, and most of it was fiction anyway.
What I read? Why, I’m wrapping upp Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach trilogy. I read the first book (Annihilation) when it came out, and then just didn’t follow it up. The third and final book (Acceptance) is great, I’m glad I returned to that crazy world of his. Now I kind of want the Area X hardcover version with the full trilogy. The cover’s great.

Jeff’s on Twitter, by the way. He posts a lot of wildlife.

What do YOU need this morning? How about the barred owl right outside the front door when I went to get the paper just now. #VanderWild

Hey, new music from Muse. That was surprisingly melodic metal, wasn’t it? I think it’ll need a few more listens.
Our new single, 'Won't Stand Down' is out everywhere now. Listen at .

Behind the scenes
It was a busy week, so I didn’t get much done on the Bored Horse site. I did launch a dark mode feature, tweaked the link animations, and added some stuff to the footer. It’s all in the changelog.
Coming up is a proper logo, something I’ve put up for quite a bit. It will probably not happen next week, because we got a shipment of some, er, stuff, for a side-project, so that’ll take precedence.
That’s it for this week. I hope you enjoyed this issue, and if you did, don’t hesitate to share it with your friends (or enemies, I don’t care). Until next time, I’ll be wasting my time on Twitter, as usual.
Take care!
